SCHIAVONE EDGES GIORGI IN ISTANBUL

2015-7-24

ISTANBUL, Turkey - Francesca Schiavone and Kirsten Flipkens sent two more seeds tumbling out of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup as the second round wrapped up at the International stop.

Flipkens was the first of the veteran pair to advance, losing a lopsided first set but then running away with it from there to take out the tournament's No.4 seed, Alizé Cornet, in three, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Schiavone followed suit in the feature night match, rallying from 5-3 down in the second set to close out the No.5 seed, fellow Italian Camila Giorgi, in a very competitive two-setter, 6-4, 7-6(6).

"She's not easy to play against, but I'm pleased with how I performed," Schiavone said afterwards.

"I feel like a local here with all of the support from the crowd!"

Schiavone has had a difficult few years - a former World No.4, she's currently down at No.85 in the world. But she's now through to her first WTA quarterfinal since Antwerp in February, and if she goes one step further, it'll be her first WTA semifinal since Hong Kong last September. A revival?

"I love tennis and I just want to keep playing and keep winning," the 2010 French Open winner said.

"I've had some tough times. The quarterfinals is great to be a part of, but I want to keep going."

Schiavone and Flipkens will actually play each other in the quarters. Flipkens leads Schiavone in the head-to-head, 3-2, and the individual matches are tight too - the last four have gone to three sets.

With Cornet and Giorgi out, now there's only one seed left in the final eight, and that's the No.8 seed, Tsvetana Pironkova, who outslugged WTA Rising Star Kurumi Nara earlier in the day, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Rounding out the winners on Thursday was Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko, who took out No.1 seed Venus Williams earlier in the week. She kept it going against Mona Barthel, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
