World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska to Defend Tianjin Open Crown

25April 2016–Reigning Tianjin Open Champion AgnieszkaRadwanska will return to the Tianjin Tuanbo International Tennis Center to defend her title this coming October and heralds the first marquee player announcement for the third edition of the WTA International Series event to be held between 10- 16 October, 2016.

"Last year I had a great experience playing in Tianjin. The tournament is really nice, the staff do a great job of looking after everyone and the fans are very enthusiastic. Winning the tournament last year helped me qualify for the WTA Finals, which I also won, so I am very much looking forward to returning to Tianjin again to defend my title," enthused the 27-year-old.

Radwanska’s 2015 Tianjin Open title over WTA rising star Danka Kovinic secured her place in the WTA Finals Singapore for the fifth consecutive year before going onto to claim the crown, the biggest title of her career, and finish the 2015 season ranked fifth. Shethen bookmarked her year by claiming the WTA Match of the Year and WTA Fan Favorite Player awards.

This year the Pole had a blistering start to the season, claiming her 18th WTA title at the Shenzhen Open, proving that China has become a happy hunting ground.Semi-final appearances at the Australian Open, Doha and Indian Wells then saw Radwanska climb to second on the WTA Rankings behind Serena Williams. Last week, she started her clay court by winning the Stuttgart crown.

Should Radwanska remain within the top 5 she will become the first Top 5 ranked player to participate in the Tianjin Open. (As of 22 April – Current World Ranking: 2).

“Agnieszka’s decision to return to Tianjin not only highlights the growing success of this young event but demonstrates its ability to attract the highest calibre players to play the Tianjin Open.
