GIORGI GRINDS IT OUT IN KATOWICE

2015-4-9

KATOWICE, Poland - Alizé Cornet and Camila Giorgi, Agnieszka Radwanska's top challengers at the Katowice Open this year, were both forced to fight back from a set down to win on Wednesday.

Watch live action from Katowice this week on WTA Live powered by TennisTV!

The No.3-seeded Giorgi was the first to move through, dropping a 68-minute first set despite holding two set points at 6-5, but clawing back to beat Polish qualifier Magda Linette, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-3.

"In the first set I wasn't consistent. I was playing well, but I made some mistakes in the important points, especially in the tie-break," Giorgi said after the match. "Because of that the tie-break went really fast. I think I was trying to finish the points too fast, which wasn't a good tactic. So from the start of the second set I tried to use the tactics I needed to do. I was much better in the next two sets."

Giorgi will get a day off now before getting back on the court on Quarterfinal Friday.

"I hope to keep playing like this," she said. "I just want to stay consistent and keep going here."

The Italian was asked about her inspirations too - which players inspired her, and still inspire her.

"I was always watching Sampras and Agassi - for me they were the best, and still the best," Giorgi said. "And my dad taught me to anticipate and not give time to the opponent, and always be aggressive."

Cornet, the No.2 seed and defending champion, also fought back to beat Polona Hercog, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

"Well it was a huge match. Polona played really well," Cornet said. "After I was down a set I really felt the energy to come back - mentally and physically I was just ready for a big fight. I definitely love this tournament. The whole ambiance gives me so much energy and so much strength, and I didn't want it to be done, so I just fought until the end. Playing in Katowice always gives me extra motivation.

"I was playing really good tennis at the end. I'm really happy to win this match tonight."

Two more second round matches also took the court on Wednesday, with Klara Koukalova rallying from a break down in the second set to beat Vera Zvonareva in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, and Alison Van Uytvanck beating Carina Witthoeft in the late night match in a battle of WTA Rising Stars, 6-3, 6-3.

The last first round was also played, with Monica Niculescu beating Kristina Mladenovic, 6-4, 6-4.
