MUGURUZA POWERS INTO SECOND ROUND

2015-4-22

STUTTGART, Germany - WTA Rising Star Garbi馿 Muguruza fired a warning shot that echoed all the way around the Porsche Arena on Tuesday afternoon, swatting aside the challenge of Barbora Strycova in straight sets.

A flying start saw Muguruza thumping winners for fun past her helpless opponent and pocketing the first set in barely 20 minutes. She was detained slightly longer in the second, Strycova mounting a late rally before finally going down 6-1, 6-4.

Muguruza failed to serve the match out at 5-2 and, despite doing so in emphatic fashion second time around, admitted there were a few nerves jangling around.

"It was a difficult moment in my first match because you're nervous as you know you're serving to win the match," Muguruza said. "I told myself, 'Don't worry, you're playing well', and I just waited for my moment."

In the end, Muguruza finished with 18 winners and if she continues this form, she will pose a major threat to No.2 seed Simona Halep in the second round.

Muguruza is not averse to ruffling the feathers of the big names on tour. Last May, the Spaniard shocked Serena Williams - and the sporting world - with a sensational second round upset at the French Open, and she has also proven to be a thorn in Halep's side. Having beaten the Romanian in Wuhan at the back end of 2014, Muguruza repeated the trick at the Fed Cup this February, winning in straight sets.
Halep, who as one of the top four seeds received an opening round bye, has readied herself for a stern examination in her first outing of the clay court season.

"A tough match is awaiting me," Halep said. "So, I just want to adapt myself to the clay court and I want to find a little bit the game and to see how I have to play for the next tournaments.

"I really want to play good tennis here because in Germany was my first title WTA, so I remember Numberg pretty well. But here it's pretty tough, everyone is playing good tennis on a high level in the world. So, it will be difficult. But I have my chance and I will fight for it for sure."
