SAFINA VS WOZNIACKI, MADRID 2009

2015-5-8

MADRID, Spain - The Mutua Madrid Open is one of the biggest events on the WTA calendar, and the magic all began in 2009 as Dinara Safina, who had recently been crowned No.1, reigned supreme.

A few weeks before the tournament Safina had become the second Russian to rise to No.1, after Maria Sharapova, of course, and once she was at the top of the game she was playing at another level - finals of Stuttgart, title in Rome, then another final in Madrid. Awaiting her: Caroline Wozniacki.

With her points from reaching the final Wozniacki was set to become the newest member of the Top 10, an ascent that would eventually lead to No.1, but Safina was just too powerful and confident.

Safina was devastating on serve - she held all nine of her service games in the championship match.

She also ripped winner...

After winner...

After winner.

After storming out to a 6-2, 2-0 lead, Safina went into a holding pattern with Wozniacki until she came out of it with a 6-2, 6-4 victory, and her 14th win in 15 matches since rising to World No.1.

"I have come to find my place. I feel comfortable being No.1," Safina said afterwards. "It was my dream from the beginning to be No.1 and I always believed I could get it. Once I got it, I was ready for it.

"That's why I think I'm enjoying it so much. Since I became No.1, I've played better and better."

Safina and Wozniacki shared the trophy ceremony with two of tennis history's greatest legends:

Safina also got to share the stage with one of cinema's legends - Hilary Swank, two-time Best Actress winner at the Oscars for Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby. She also got the key to a huge car.
