HINGIS & MIRZA SET FOR PARIS CHALLENGE

2015-5-27

PARIS, France - The world's top doubles team, Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza, begin their first Grand Slam challenge as a duo against Julia Goerges and Barbora Krejcikova.

Hingis and Mirza hold three titles so far - they won at Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set before heading to Charleston for their third title - and they enter Roland Garros following solid showings in Madrid and Rome, where they reached the quarterfinals and final.

Hingis herself is no stranger to the Coupe Simone Mathieu - she's won the French Open doubles crown twice, with Mary Pierce in 2000 and with Jana Novotna in 1998. She also made the final in 1999 alongside Anna Kournikova.

Also in contention are Australian Open winners Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova. Since that triumphant start to life together Down Under, the pair have won in Stuttgart and reached the semifinals and quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome, respectively. Mattek-Sands and Safarova hope to become the first doubles team since Venus and Serena Williams in 2010 to win the first two Grand Slams of the year.

Elsewhere, 2013 champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, who've made back-to-back final appearances in Indian Wells and Miami this year, open against French wildcards Mathilde Johansson and Virginie Razzano.

Anabel Medina Garrigues, who won the title with Virginia Ruano Pascual in 2008 and 2009, pairs again with partner Chan Hao-Ching, taking on Aleksandra Krunic and Lesia Tsurenko first up.

A singles champion in 2010, Francesca Schiavone seeks a matching doubles title with partner Kimiko Date-Krumm, while other teams of note include the in-form Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, and the all-Spanish pairing of Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro.
