JJ WINS, SHVEDOVA EDGES BOUCHARD

2015-6-10

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands - The underdogs rose up against the Top 2 seeds at the Topshelf Open, and while Jelena Jankovic survived, Eugenie Bouchard fell to Yaroslava Shvedova.

Fresh off reaching the doubles final at Roland Garros, Shvedova came out blazing, breaking in the first game and going up 3-1, and after Bouchard fought back to 3-3, breaking again to win the first set, 6-4.

Bouchard took it to a whole new level from there, winning 10 of the next 11 games to take the second set, 6-1, and race out to a 4-0 lead in the third set, even getting to 0-30 in the next game with Shvedova serving. But the Kazakhstani retaliated in a big way from there, reeling off six games in a row - winning the last 12 points of the match, too - to pull off a stunner in just under two hours, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

"I'm happy I managed to adapt to the grass today - on Sunday I just finished the final of doubles in Roland Garros," Shvedova said after the match. "It was a good match. It wasn't easy - she's playing well, and she was playing very well in the second and third set. But I got all my energy together from deep inside myself, and I just kept going. In the end everything was working for me. I'm really happy."

"I'm always disappointed to lose, but I feel like I played some good tennis, and I'm getting closer to where I want to be on the court," Bouchard said. "It's a small step forward. I feel like I was serving and returning better. I felt like I was playing a lot more instinctively out there than I have been.

"I need to close matches out better, but this was a step in the right direction."

For a while it looked like the No.2-seeded Jankovic was in trouble, too, falling behind 4-1 in the first set, but she regrouped and battled past WTA Rising Star Tereza Smitkova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Bouchard wasn't the only seed to fall, as No.8 seed Johanna Larsson lost to Klara Koukalova, 6-4, 6-1.

It was a good day for other seeds, as No.4 seed Belinda Bencic beat American qualifier Jessica Pegula, 6-2, 7-6(3), No.6 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat another American qualifier by almost the same score, 6-2, 7-6(4), and No.7 seed Kristina Mladenovic beat Timea Babos, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2.

Tatjana Maria, Kiki Bertens, Alison Van Uytvanck, Annika Beck and Andrea Hlavackova also won.
